Moving

We cleaned all day and the house seemed messier than when we started. Our furniture is slowly dwindling…we are almost at camping in our apartment now. The mattress is on the floor, we are using camp chairs instead of a couch.

All that is coming back with us is a mini van full of stuff. We did the same coming out. It is a bit liberating going through everything, but I also know that I have to basically start from scratch wherever we will settle.

And I don’t know exactly where that will be. Over the next few weeks and with lots of traveling we should figure it out.

Leaves and Play

Being a mom can be hard because there are no regular breaks and no concrete way to know how I am doing. Even though I love my kids a whole heap sometimes I wish they would disappear momentarily. (Sleeping at the same time fulfills this desire, and luckily they both went down today without too much trouble.)

But it is also pretty awesome. I get to play a lot.

We have:

  • Fashioned a kitchen out of excess kitchen supplies including a toaster over. (It  is set up so it can’t be plugged in and heat up.)
  • Gathered and sorted fall leaves.
  • Started using food coloring a lot in our baths. Foam shapes have also been a hit. (Go here for more thoughts.)
  • Made homemade play dough that doubled as a science experiment (the actual making of the play dough) and art project.
  • Created scarecrows for fall. PB has also called his a clown and a monster.
  • Responded to the advances of a small crawling love bird who is enraptured with mamma.

Monkeys

Five little monkeys jumping on the bed,
One fell off and bumped his head.
Mama called the Doctor and the Doctor said,
“No more monkeys jumping on the bed!”

This is on of my nieces favorite song. At only 1.5 years, she’ll do the actions. It is a great song to do while testing IKEA mattresses. Especially if little niece tumbles off the bed and bumps her head right in the middle of singing it. I couldn’t stop laughing. (My niece was fine by the way.)

Pumpkin Recipe

How to Make Pumpkin Bread Muffins

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 cups pumpkin (This was from our Halloween pumpkin that turned out to be bred for looks not taste.)
  • 3/4 cup oil
  • 3 1/3 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2-3 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice

Combine ingredients in no particular order. Pour in bread pan. Think “Wow that is really full.” Stick it in over anyway and bake 325 for 1 hr. At the end of the hour the batter has spread all over the oven and will not even be remotely cooked.

Dump it out and spoon almost of all of the middle into a muffin tin. Bake muffins at 325 for another 15 minutes.  Snack on the outside that actually cooked while muffins are baking.

This actually tasted very good, even if the recipe and the cook were flawed. Earlier in the day Joe had tried cooking cookie dough in the microwave at work and ended up with a smoke cloud and burning sugar smell. Apparently we both need cooking lessons.

Brothers

I love that C is crawling. He is very cute. Several time yesterday he tried to go crawling to get something PB had and PB would take off with it just as soon as he got there. He was getting frustrated. Lots of work, and no luck. He has also discovered that even if he can see something out on the balcony that looks fun to play with, he cannot crawl through glass to get it.

PB is growing up which can be both frustrating and wonderful. He can be a pain to deal with, but then he is amazing other times. He generally likes to help out with chores. Today he sprayed the foam to clean up spots on the carpet. Another day he wanted to keep “washing” the car with his own spray bottle and rag long after we were done waxing. He also did most of the work while cooking a box of mac and cheese: he was so excited we were eating something for dinner that he actually likes.

Here are my adorable kids, who are far to young to smile at the same time.

Why I’m a Mormon

Growing up I have always been a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Getting older though, I have recently taken a harder look about what the church has brought me in my life. This is my list:

Priesthood Ordinances

I have made covenants with God. As I strive my best in keeping the commandments and coming unto Christ, I have the promise of an Eternal Marriage and Family, and Eternal Life. Because of the priesthood, I have the assurance that what is “bound on earth shall be bound in heaven.”

Knowledge

I know the Plan of Salvation. I have not only the Bible but the Book of Mormon and the words of living prophets to study. I also gain personal guidance so that I can perform God’s will in my life.

Strength and Guidance

I would not be where I am without the enabling and redeeming power of the Holy Spirit. My life has been strengthened by God, and I love the course where He has led me, the blessings He has poured upon me.

I am a Mormon, because this is the most complete and true church and the right place for me. Most of all, I have come to a knowledge of Christ as my Redeemer. Through Him, I am able to live in a beautiful family and have assurance that I can be with them eternally.

Milestones

Just a few nights ago, I realized that C had gone from his belly to sitting. He had been a bit of a shelled turtle before. If he fell on his belly or was laying on his back, he was stuck. He was quite grumpy sometimes because of it. Then all of a sudden, he figured it out. Figuring it out made it easier for me, because I didn’t have to rescue him anymore.

Tonight he did this.

Go C!

I love going new places, finding beautiful spots outdoors. I love the crisp autumn air. I love seeing my children play.

Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew

I picked up this e-book on sale on Amazon recently. I’ve read the original, scanned the changes to the updated version and although I like many aspects of it, I have one huge problem with it.

I like soil. In square foot gardening you no longer have to deal with the texture, drainage, CEC, fertility, OM level, and all that good stuff I learned in two soil classes in college. Instead you just have to know the magic formula for Mel’s mix. Mel’s mix is basically a homemade soil-less sterile potting mixture.

Soil is filled with complex biota. Symbiotic relationships between plants and fungi or bacteria. Earthworms churning and composting the soil. The more you learn about all the intricate relationships in soil the more awesome it is.

And square foot gardening says ignore all that awesomeness and use this sterile stuff instead.

There are situations where the soil might not be condusive for vegetable growth. In this case, go head and use the mix. But realize that now you will need more water, more fertilizer, and your plants will probably not grow as well as if they were in good soil.

But if your soil is decent, work on improving it, not ignoring it. Add compost, grow cover crops, avoid over tilling, give your soil love. And get better, tasteful veggies.

Many people want organic produce from their garden, and the best thing about organic gardening is it is all about developing a sustainable soil system. Because of this, I can’t really see how square foot gardening and organic gardening mix. Square foot gardening is filled with bringing in exterior inputs. Organic gardening is about improving and cycling what you have.

So I would go out and arrange my veggies in nice little squares. I do like the book overall. But I’m also not in a hurry to build raised beds and bring in Mel’s mix.

A Visit from the Family

These cute people came and visited.

We packed a lot into a week (at least a lot for our assortment of small children) including:

  • Ikea, a spur of the moment activity because they are re-doing the outside of the apartment and we wanted to get away from the banging. And then we ended up with free breakfast.
  • Story time at the library.
  • Several parks (including attempting to play volleyball which doesn’t work too well with kids).
  • Playing out on the deck with sensory bins and paint. (Little MM tried to eat the paint and was quickly excluded from the activity.)

  • Buying a pumpkin at a farm, complete with hay ride.
  • An indoor playground
  • Riding to the top of Stone Mountain and watching the laser show there. CD even enjoyed the fireworks after he realized the loud sounds didn’t mean much.
  • Going to the puppet museum that actually ended up scaring our kids. They did enjoy playing puppets, and PB liked the Sesame Street puppets but there was some scary stuff there too.
  • And just talking and enjoying each other.

My little tidbit of late is I say “I can’t do this” too much. They are just destructive words. I usually can just fine, and the Lord is always there helping. I should say “I am doing this, and I can continue to do this, and I can enjoy it.” I want to cultivate a more positive, grateful attitude.
